George RR Martin reveals how many seasons House of the Dragon will have, at a minimum

There are barely a couple of chapters left before the end of the first season of HBO Max’s Game of Thrones prequel. And the question is unavoidable. How many seasons will House of the Dragon have?

This is a special series, because it is based on a book, Fire and Blood, written by George RR Martin, the original author of Game of Thrones.

When you watch a narrative series like this you expect to see the full story, something you can never be sure of on a streaming platform, which cancels series with a snap of the fingers. Even less so on HBO Max, where the CEO himself has said that any series can be canceled at any time.

How many seasons are House of the Dragon?

A few days after the series premiered, HBO Max officially confirmed the shooting of the second season. Is it enough to tell the whole book?

It is true that, so far, it seems that The House of the Dragon is taking some liberties with the book, especially in the matter of deaths … And HBO has no problem going beyond the books, as it did in the last seasons of Game of Thrones… with the controversial result that we all know.

How many seasons will House of the Dragon have? George RR Martin, the author of the book on which it is based, has provided an important clue.

In a new post on his blog, the writer justifies the time jumps in the series because now the seasons usually have 9 or 10 episodes, when at the time of The Sopranos there were 13 episodes. And much earlier, in the times of Star Trek or The X Files, up to 22 episodes per season.

Martin says that with 13-episode seasons, it would not be necessary to make such large time jumps, but there would be a risk that the series would be too slow for many, and people would complain that “nothing relevant happens”.

Finally, the writer explains that, to count the entire book, at 10 episodes per season, House of the Dragon will need at least four seasons. So here we have an important fact. Unless HBO Max puts in the scissors, it seems that we have a series for a few more years…
