Nicaraguan companies collect electronic waste to educate children

A group of 20 Nicaraguan companies brought together in the Nicaraguan Union for Corporate Social Responsibility (Unirse) commemorated this Friday the International Day of Electronic and Electrical Waste with a waste collection aimed at educating children.

Dozens of companies from various areas, as well as recyclers and entrepreneurs of products with recycled materials, participated in the fair “Nicaragua does recycle”, in which a “recycling” was developed, with the purpose of collecting 10 tons of electronic and electrical waste .

The objective of Unirse, together with the Chamber of Recyclers of Nicaragua, the Cleaner Production Center of Nicaragua (CPmL-N), and Hanter Metals, is that the economic profits obtained from the collected materials serve to deliver the Prize to Naturalist Childhood 2023.

The winner of this award will be a minor who stands out in Nicaragua for his actions in favor of the environment, explained to EFE the coordinator of the fair, Jany Tercero.

“What we want to do with this activity is to raise awareness, so that people begin to move from a linear economy to a circular economy, for this type of waste (electronic and electrical) to include them in those cycles and not be taking the products out of the nature,” said Tercero.

The “recycling” received waste from mobile phones, tablets, laptops, computers, appliances, among others, while local artisans offered products made with recycled materials.

According to data from the Chamber of Recyclers, Nicaragua exports some 40 million dollars a year in raw materials collected as waste, mainly to neighboring Central American countries.

Official figures indicate that this type of trade in Nicaragua represents 12% of Central America, with about one million metric tons per year.
