A video showing Iranian riot forces sexually assaulting a female protester has sparked fury on social media in the Middle Eastern country.
Netizens expressed their outrage, and many they called for “justice” and the resignation of the chief of police for the abuse that occurred when the young woman was detained by the agents.
Even some of those who support the government condemned the attackers.
Despite the fact that some functions of social networks are being blocked by the authorities lately, Iranians have managed to share images of the protests.
The country has been rocked by the most intense unrest in decades.
Protests erupted last month over the death of Mahsa Aminia 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who was in police custody.
Authorities say the young woman died of an underlying health condition, but her family says the death occurred after she was beaten by morale police.
Numerous videos about the demonstrations have gone viral both inside and outside of Iran.
What happened?
In the case of the sexual assault on the young woman, it is known that it occurred on Wednesday at the Argentinian Square in Tehranthe capital of Iran.
A video shared many times shows a group of agents in riot gear surrounding a woman on a street.
One of them grabs her by the neck and leads her towards dozens of police officers, many of whom use motorcycles.
As the woman is pushed towards one of the vehicles, a police officer approaches her from behind and puts his left hand on her buttocks.
The woman then drops to the ground as more officers surround her. A female voice behind the camera is heard saying: “They’re pulling her hair.”
Drivers of nearby vehicles begin to honk their horns, a form of protest in similar situations seen in recent days across the country.
The woman, who appears to have no hijab on her head, is then seen getting to her feet and fleeing the scene.
At this point, the same voice from the clip is heard saying, “Look at it [al policía]he’s laughing”.
What do the authorities say?
The Tehran Police Public Relations office said the incident is under investigation, the state agency reported. irna.
The police statement does not give details of what happenedbut says that “enemies who used psychological warfare have attempted to cause public anxiety and incite violence.”
The fact that the incident took place in public has led human rights activists to question what security forces might be doing behind closed doors.
“Have they brought the harassment of the young women of this land to the streets with the aim of showing us in public the obscenity, lewdness and filth of the prisons?” questioned a user of social networks called Atefeh.
Many inmates, especially political prisoners, have reported mistreatment, including sexual and psychological abuse, for years.
Others said the video had made them more determined to take to the streets to protest.
