MIAMI, United States. – This Friday Eugenio Hernández Espinosa died in Havana, one of the classic authors of Cuban dramaturgy, National Theater Award in 2005, and Literature in 2020, according to reports official media.
Hernández Espinosa was born in 1936 and became stage and general director of the Teatro Caribeño company. In addition, he was the author of dozens of plays staged by the main groups in the country and adapted for film and television.
To the national playwright he bequeathed works such as “María Antonia”, “My partner Manolo”, “Calixta Committee”, “Emelina Cundiamor” and “Lagarto Pisabonito”.
“Cuban culture is in mourning. An immense man has passed away, our National Theater Award and National Literature Award, Eugenio Hernández Espinosa. Reach family, friends and your public, our deepest condolences”, posted on facebook the National Council for the Performing Arts.
For its part, the University of the Arts (ISA) lament the death of “one of the most important contemporary Cuban playwrights” and highlighted his work as artistic director and general director of the Caribbean Theater.
“His theater is distinguished by explorations into popular culture and Afro-Cuban traditions. His work is representative of the old popular art in Cuba”, ISA also highlighted.
Also, the official newspaper workers considered that the work of Hernández Espinosa was “strongly rooted in the identity of its people” and constituted “one of the most solid ensembles of Cuban dramatic literature.”
On the other hand, in the cinema, the playwright and writer was responsible for screenplays and adaptations of plays. His filmography includes the films “Patakín” (1982), by Manuel Octavio Gómez; “The useless death of my partner Manolo” (1989), by Julio García-Espinosa; “María Antonia” (1990), by Sergio Giral, “Odor oak” (2003) and “El Mayor” (2020), by Rigoberto López.
