Barranquilla’s strategy to be a Biodivercity

Barranquilla's strategy to be a Biodivercity

For more than 15 years Barranquilla has been working to become more and more a tourist attraction due to its coastal area, its drive and development to become a preferred meeting center for all sectors.

(Barrancabermeja and Barranquilla join).

“Since then, the mayors wanted to get closer to the private sector because they knew it was strategic, but how to do it if they did not trust the public sector, it was a job to start building that public-private articulation, it has been understood that the only one without another They wouldn’t be as successful.” said Vicky Osorio, executive director of ProBarranquilla.

This articulation, according to the director of ProBarranquilla, began to occur through the channeling of streams, a historical problem that finally had a solution, which changed the course of the city and allowed this articulation.

“This continued until later, for example, with the Malecón de Barranquilla, allowing an area made entirely of factories to be moved and in three years it would already be a reality and transform the city for many to share,” the director stated.

In this way, Barranquilla began to shape its own tourism and not just the city ‘passing through between Cartagena and Santa Marta’. This is why it has obtained as a result that it is currently the tourist place with the most visitors per year.

Barranquilla is betting through these strategies to add to the economy of the city, but at the same time, stay on the margin of environmental and social sustainability, doing ecotourism.

“It is very important for investment and business issues, today companies are focused on sustainability at the time of establishing their operation. When there is a city with that focus, it would already mean an advantage, without much effort you begin to meet the SDG objectives”, concluded.

Among the goals, the city wants to recover the Ciénaga de Mallorquín, create green paths from recyclable materials and recover the beaches so that they can be visited by tourists always hand in hand with the environment.

In addition to all this plan, the sandbank is also betting on an electric train to allow access to the beach to prevent the entry of polluting vehicles. With this, the city works to be the first biodiver-city of Colombia.

Taking advantage of its logistics location, Barranquilla has a large corridor ready for foreign trade, with which they work to attract the business sector, not only to settle in the city, but also invite the industry to build business tourism.

“Eventually the Puerta de Oro convention center was built, Barranquilla did not have a venue of this capacity, and that opens a very large door for business tourism because we can finally attract certain types of events that we previously had nowhere to hold. This would boost the region’s economy.” highlighted the director of ProBarranquilla.
