MIAMI, United States. – The Attorney General’s Office announced this Friday that “it controls criminal proceedings in which events that disturbed public order and citizen tranquility are investigated” after the passage of Hurricane Ian through the national territory, alluding to the popular protests that occurred mainly in Havana at the end of September.
After the impact of the meteor in the western part of the island and the total blackout that ensued, many Cubans staged cacerolazos and road closures to demand the restoration of electricity service, as well as freedom.
In a statementthe Prosecutor’s Office indicated that such events “were related to the burning of facilities, the execution of acts of vandalism, the closure of public roads in order to prevent the movement of vehicles and people, the attacks and offenses against officials and law enforcement, and incitement to violence.
In addition, the Prosecutor’s Office warned that “prevention actions were carried out with parents who used minor children, placing them in risk scenarios, neglecting their duties of protection, assistance, education and care towards them.”
“The facts under investigation will receive the corresponding criminal legal response. The accused are assured of respect for the constitutional rights and guarantees of due process,” reads the note.
This is not the first time that the regime has warned protesters. Earlier this month The official presenter Humberto López warned those who protested in the streets that they would have to answer in court for participating in alleged crimes of public disorder.
In this sense, López indicated that the new Penal Code “is very clear” regarding the treatment that those who commit this type of crime should receive. He also pointed out that the Revolution has legitimacy and moral strength to contain anti-government protests.
“Anarchy in Cuba? Does this country lack the moral strength to contain these events? In addition to the moral force that emanates from the unity and the majority support of the people for their revolution, in addition to that, which is enough, there are laws here, there is a criminal code that is very clear,” López warned.
The regime’s spokesman also described as “outrageous” the use of minors in human cordons. According to the lawyer, it is a criminal act contained in article 402.1, which regulates “Crimes against the comprehensive development of minors.”
Shortly before, the governor of Havana, Reinaldo Garcia Zapatawarned that the people who committed crimes defined in the Penal Code during the protests would be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law.
“It is inexcusable that these claims are made committing social indiscipline and public disorder,” said the leader, who also emphasized the barricades and the use of children in the cordons to block public roads.
“This is a crime that will be analyzed at the time with all the mothers who took their children and used them as a barrier to contain the road,” said the governor of Havana during his speech in the “Round Table” space.
