The Foreign Ministry pronounces itself before the new immigration policy of the United States

Faced with the new immigration policy adopted by the United States, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Janaina Tewaney, indicated that the Panamanian Government maintains the principle of Shared Responsibility.

Minister Tewaney indicated that upon receiving this announcement, she immediately coordinated with the Foreign Minister of Costa Rica and with the head of the United States mission in Panama, Stewart Tuttle, in order to coordinate at technical levels the way in which to receive help of some kind or make a request for technical or logistical cooperation to manage this crisis.

Tewaney highlighted that on October 10, Panama received the historical peak number of irregular migration through the Darién and “we consider it urgent that countries in the region, mainly those in the South, can understand that the responsibility to coordinate this humanitarian crisis belongs to everyone.”

The chancellor explained that a strategy is being developed to propose initiatives in a technical meeting that will take place in the next two weeks in Colombia, with the coordination of Costa Rica and the United States, which allow joint initiatives to control irregular traffic. The objective is to find a strategy so that this crisis does not directly affect our country, a situation that is forcing us to invest many resources.

“Right now, most of the migrants are of Venezuelan nationality and therefore coordination with Colombia, Ecuador and other countries of the South is important,” he stressed. “Panama is interested in raising this situation at the multilateral level because it is the multilateral organizations that are going to help us in technical matters, in logistics, and for any type of fund that is required for the humane and decent treatment of these migrants who pass through a complicated journey and that they can receive adequate treatment, either for their voluntary return or in case they go to Mexico and remain in the place where they are going to be recipients, “he said.
