The prosecutor Gabriela Fossati charged before the Justice the wife of the notary public Álvaro Fernández for her alleged participation in the criminal gang that was dedicated to the falsification of passports of which the former custodian of the president Luis Lacalle Pou was a part, Alexander Astesian.
The woman, like the notary public, was charged with the crimes of assumption of marital status and association to commit a crime. Russian citizen Alexey Silvaev, who also headed the organization, was also charged with these crimes.
As part of the process, the Justice ordered that the woman remain in preventive detention until February of next year, sources from the Attorney General’s Office.
The investigations indicate that Silvaev was in charge of obtaining clients interested in accessing the passports. Meanwhile, Fernández and his wife would be in charge of managing the documents. By inserting adulterated Russian birth certificates and registering Russian citizens as Uruguayans, these people gained access to passports.
Artesiano, meanwhile, was the one who negotiated with public officials in strategic places to speed up the procedures.
The clerk is confined in jail and on October 4 declared again before the Prosecutor’s Office. Silvaev, meanwhile, will testify again before Fossati next Tuesday. Both were charged on September 27.
