Producers call for national industry crisis on World Egg Day

MOCHA. – On the occasion of the celebration of World Egg Day, the president of the National Association of Producers of Laying Hens (Asonaprop), Jose Pichardo, offered statements about the crisis in that industry and at the same time congratulated the producers and consumers of the country, and the world.

Through a statement, Asonaprop pointed out that the country’s egg industry began about 60 years ago, and we are pleased to report, first, that it is producing 3,000 million eggs a year, supplying the national demand and an important part of the Haitian demand; second, that we have a per capita consumption of 225 eggs per year (with aspirations to increase to more than 300 eggs, as is the case in other countries

He also indicated “third, that we have the participation of hundreds of large, medium and small producers, distributed throughout the national territory, and creating thousands of jobs directly and indirectly. The egg industry produces efficiently, complying with production parameters that are comparable to world averages”.

He added that: “we produce a low-cost, high-protein food that is considered by experts to be an essential component of human nutrition. Highly nutritious and easily digestible. Rich in components such as phosphorus, calcium, iron, iodine and selenium, as well as vitamins that play important roles in maintaining body functions. Associated with decreased risk of liver disease and breast cancer; and approved for consumption by prestigious institutions such as the American Cardiology Association (AHA)”.

Farm sales prices range between RD$4.00 and RD$4.50 pesos while production costs are above RD$5.00 pesos per unit, coupled with the existence of a large inventory on the farm that does not find a market.

Overproduction arises as a consequence of the granting of import permits for light breeding hens, carried out by previous and current authorities, in recent years; increasing their supply by 40%, in a market that is growing by 4%.

“Asonaprop, warned of the consequences that would derive from the lack of planning, through public documents; and today, the egg industry is suffering the effects of it”,

“On World Egg Day, we call on the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader Corona, to come to the aid of the productive sector to find solutions to this crisis, prevent producers from going bankrupt and continue to weaken this industry. of high national interest that has been raised with great effort and sacrifice. We will keep waiting for your prompt response”, concludes the Asonaprop statement.
