Minister Grau for old tweets against Carabineros: “They were said in a specific context (…) I do not currently share it”

The Minister of Economy, Nicholas Grau, referred this Friday afternoon to old tweets in which he criticized Carabineros. In this regard, he stated that he published them in a “context of great frustration” and that he does not currently share those comments.

“Criminal and murderous pacos. I hope that all of you and your political bosses pay for all the damage caused,” says a tweet from Grau, published on February 5, 2021. “Murderers. The people have every right to hate them,” says another publication, uploaded on February 5, 2021.

Regarding those tweets -which he later deleted-, the head of Economy said from Valdivia that “we as a Government fully support the Carabineros”.

“Carabineros plays a fundamental role in our society, those tweets were said in a specific context of great frustration, I say it from a more personal level, there are specific events that occurred on those days that caused us annoyance and frustration,” he added.

“Of course, the way it is said is something that I do not currently share and I think it does not contribute to the future, I think it is very important that as a Government we contribute to improving relations in our country and that starts, of course, for supporting the function of Carabineros”, he added.

Regarding the decision to delete those publications against Carabineros, Grau said that “I try not to do it in general, because I think that one is what one is and one cannot hide what he has said in the past, but I understand that currently Comments of that type do not contribute anything and that is why I have made that decision.

“Carabineros is a very important institution for the country, for people in their day to day. It is important that they carry out their work, respecting human rights and taking care of people’s lives, ”he added.

The government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo, was also consulted about Grau’s tweets and commented that “the most important call is to join, rather than to the controversy, to join the solutions and work to combat crime, organized crime and drug trafficking. To join in reinforcing the work of the police that we are doing now”.

“I want to point out that, the facts more than the controversies about tweets or comments from the past, the facts that this Government is executing. Not the speech, the facts,” he added.
