The PT candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said today (14th) that it is necessary to guarantee social security benefits for all workers, even those who do not have a formal contract.
“I admit that there are people who want to work on their own, without a formal contract. But there has to be a social security system for that citizen when misfortune happens. The guy crashes the bike or crashes the car. He needs a security system that guarantees him a minimum of survival”, he told the press in Recife (PE).
Lula also highlighted that he intends to make changes to the labor legislation, but not to completely revoke the changes made by the reforms in recent years. “That’s why we want to have an in-depth discussion with businessmen and the trade union movement on the CLT issue. [Consolidação das Leis do Trabalho] and workers’ rights. We don’t want a return to the past, we just want to ensure that workers are not treated like slaves,” he added.

The candidate also stressed that the focus of an eventual new government will be the fight against hunger. “I have an obsession with ending hunger. Because I cannot admit that a country that is the third producer of food in the world, the first producer of animal protein on planet Earth, has people looking for bones, for chicken carcass. There are 33 million people who go to sleep without eating every day. This is not a lack of money, it is a lack of shame on the part of those who govern the country,” he emphasized.
Among the measures that could, according to Lula, be taken to improve the population’s access to food, is the creation of regulatory stocks. “It can facilitate the increase in agricultural production, especially for small and medium rural producers. Increasing, you can make stock. By making stock, you can control the price. Put more product on the market when the price is high”, he pointed out.
