US begins deportation of Venezuelan migrants to Mexico

Migrantes venezolanos deportados a México

MIAMI, United States. — The United States government began this Thursday the deportation to Mexico of Venezuelan citizens who were being held in detention centers.

The return occurred as part of the entry into force of an agreement signed between the two countries to control the migratory flow at the borderwhich has skyrocketed during the Biden administration.

Although US authorities assured that the deportations would not be carried out retroactively, many of the deported Venezuelans had entered the United States before the new immigration measures were announced.

According to The New Heralda group made up of about 150 Venezuelans who were in a detention center in Texas were put on buses and taken to the pedestrian bridge that connects El Paso with Ciudad Juárez to force them to cross the border.

“Today they take us out, they don’t tell us anything, they don’t give us any information and they treat us as if we were criminals. Without letting us ask anything, they took us out and put us on a bus and when it stopped we saw that they had taken us to the pedestrian bridge that bordered the United States and Mexico,” Jesús Rivero, a 26-year-old Venezuelan who He had entered the US with his brother Jonathan (37) before the new measures were announced.

The EFE Agency highlights that Venezuelans received with gestures of sadness the news of the new conditions to enter the United States, where many of them have relatives.

“Help us, please! I feel sad because we come from so far away, I have welts on my feet. I have my baby sick,” she told the AFP the Venezuelan Pedro Leyva.

South of the border, the situation of these migrants will be even more difficult, since many have run out of money to pay for their lives and the shelters for migrants in places like Ciudad Juárez are at the limit of their capacity.

The US government announced last Wednesday that it had agreed with Mexico on a plan for the neighboring country to accept the expulsions of Venezuelan migrants who came to the border to request asylum.

In compensation, Washington announced a new program that will facilitate the legal entry of up to 24,000 Venezuelans a year.

Venezuelan leaders in exile questioned the new measure by the Biden administration and told the media that they expected more humanitarian treatment for the thousands of compatriots seeking to escape the regime of Nicolás Maduro.
