The Cinematographic Archive of the Cuban Diaspora will be presented in Miami

MIAMI, United States. — On October 20, the launch of the Film Archive of the Cuban Diaspora (CDfA, for its acronym in English), a project that seeks to rescue and promote Cuban cinema that is made in exile.

A press release released by the organizers indicates that the presentation will take place at the Museum of the Cuban Diaspora (1200 Coral Way, Miami, FL 33145) at seven in the evening.

At the event, the CDfA Award will be presented for the first time to Orlando Jiménez Leal, an outstanding director and cameraman based in Miami, director, among other works, of the documentary 8-Aa production of the Italian chain RAI about the trial and execution of General Arnaldo Ochoa Sánchez.

As part of the presentation of the project, there will be a special exhibition of the film Improper Conduct (1983), co-directed by Jiménez Leal himself and by Néstor Almendros.

Orlando Jiménez Leal is also remembered for having directed, together with Sabá Cabrera Infante, the short documentary P.M (1961), one of the first censored audiovisuals in Cuba after the triumph of the Revolution.

The Cinematographic Archive of the Cuban Diaspora will offer a unique digital repository that will facilitate, document and preserve this important part of this cultural heritage of the diaspora.

“By collecting and archiving materials related to these filmmakers from the diaspora, the portal seeks to lay the foundations for a new history of Cuban cinema that accounts for the extensive audiovisual production made outside of Cuba,” say the creators of the project.

The Cuban Diaspora Film Archive is also conceived “as a research, teaching, and learning project that integrates education in Cuban film and culture, new media, and primary archival research with an online scholarly publishing effort that provides a global vision of contemporary Cuban culture and its connection to Latinx. communities”.

The project is led by its director, Doctor of Philosophy Santiago Juan Navarro, professor of Hispanic Literature and Cinema in the Department of Modern Languages ​​at Florida International University (FIU); and its director of content and in charge of graphic design, the filmmaker and video artist Eliecer Jiménez Almeida.
