Havana Film Festival incorporates an LGBTIQ+ award

OnCubaNews

The International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havanaa regional benchmark for the sector, will award this year for the first time an award for the film that best reflects the theme LGBTQ+.

The director of the festival, Yumey Besú Bayo, announced this Thursday at a press conference this incorporation as one of the novelties of the 43rd edition of this event of Latin American cinema, which will take place in the Cuban capital from December 1 to 11 under the motto “Big movie”.

All the films that participate in the festival, the most important in Cuba and one of the main ones in Latin America, will be eligible for this new award, called the Arrecife Award. A “special” and “independent” jury will be in charge of choosing the winner, added Besú.

The director of the festival also explained that in this edition, the first in the traditional format of this event after two years of the pandemic, an attempt has been made to reduce the number of films in the official section and in competition.

Of the 800 films in the official section that the festival had a few years ago, the organizers seek to place it in this edition around 250. The final selection will be announced on November 22, just one week before the festival starts .

The number of films registered in this edition rises to 2,200, something that has forced a “more arduous selection work,” explained Besú.

The festival’s poster, also presented at the press conference together with the motto “Cinema in a big way”, vindicates audiovisual consumption on the big screen, in a context in which screens of different sizes proliferate.
