The National System of Emergencies and Security 911 undoubtedly constitutes the most important system for the care and protection of people in our country.
I myself had the opportunity to verify the diligence and agility of the response of the 911 System in a specific case that luckily turned out to be a false alarm but that if the servers that showed up as a result of the call had not been, they could have saved lives.
Although in the first months of its implementation the radius of action was very limited, the scope has already expanded considerably in the national geography and there are plans to cover the entire territory before the end of next year.
The system is not yet perfect but it is perfectible and improvements are being worked on. In any case, I consider it prudent to contemplate certain recommendations to improve some aspects.
It is important to establish a mechanism for the exact location of the caller, which would solve a problem for which he cannot explain an address, either because he does not know it or because the very nature of the emergency does not allow it. However, part of what was agreed with the telephone companies was that they could provide this information, so this is being worked on, but it has not yet been achieved immediately.
As regards the location of a technological form (and perhaps with the active participation of the Technological Institute of the Americas and its innovative students), for the moment it is important that the personnel who answer the calls have extensive spatial reasoning and knowledge of the area in question (such as taxi drivers, who handle an impressive amount of information on streets and sectors), to reduce the probability that an emergency cannot be attended due to something as basic as the address. In addition, this staff must be bilingual and have ready access to translators, so that the system is also functional for foreigners in the country.
The 911 is a high-priority mechanism that must be supported as one of the best government tools aimed at providing the population with greater security, and for its part, the Government must continue to make it more efficient to maximize its potential.
