Interview Notistarz.
The third season of La Reina del Sur with its star character, Teresa Mendoza, moves away from drug trafficking and arrives with a political trailer with “loves, heartbreaks, betrayal and corruption,” revealed the Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, protagonist of the series.
In this third season “we stay far away from drug trafficking. I know that the Queen of the South is that for everyone (drug trafficking) because it is based on the book by Arturo (Pérez-Reverte) but in this third one it is no longer a drug story, “said Kate del Castillo in an interview with Notistarz via zoom .
In the play La Reina del Sur by the writer Pérez-Reverte, its main character is Teresa Mendoza Chávez (alias La Mejicana), whose criminal history originates in Culiacán, Sinaloa (Mexico) with her partner Raimundo Dávila Parra, alias El Güero Dávila, aviation pilot related to the Juarez cartel.
For the Mexican actress, it is “very interesting to see how we have turned it around and it has become something fun, full of action and political things, betrayals, we show the corruption between the United States and Mexico, and then what happens in Latin America ”.
In relation to the difference that the third season has with the previous ones, he assured that “it has a lot of difference. One, the production values are a thousand times larger. This one is much better in terms of the story because we also changed the writers, we have a pool of writers without leaving Arturo Pérez-Reverte, who is the original author of the novel of the Queen of the South.
The author of the book -he emphasized- “always makes us the structure of everything that is going to be the seasons. The story is different, the places are different. We are going to see divine, lofty, magnificent Latin America. We went to Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, so as Latinos we are going to be very proud to see how beautiful we are in Latin America.”
The Queen of the South “is already so proven in all ways and in this third season she will satisfy all the needs of the fans, from a Teresa who is even more warrior than before -and that is why they follow her- to a daughter (Sofía), which is important because now they are two women”.
Two intelligent women -he noted- ”who think, that they have not been sexualized in any way. That part is very much in the hands of Teresa Mendoza, and what the Queen of the South has been”
But they will also find “all the good vibes of Epifanio Vargas (Humberto Zurita), who is unfortunate, who will not take away his unhappiness, they will see him as president of Mexico on another level”
The series will satisfy all the audience “because there are loves, heartbreaks, betrayal, corruption, that part that is always stalking to kill Teresa Mendoza and how she always puts her life at risk and this time it will be to arrive and seek justice ” .
In relation to the theme of justice in the third season, Kate del Castillo assured that injustices occur in all parts of the world, it is not an exclusive phenomenon of Latin America, and that is the reason for Teresa Mendoza to look for ” the Epifanios Vargas, who are many (…) So you have to be looking for that justice.”
The series also addresses important issues such as human trafficking to show how “they traffic girls and Teresa Mendoza finds out about a network of corruption which she is going to unmask.”
Kate del Castillo feels happy playing Teresa Mendoza, a character that has given her satisfaction in “every way” and remembers that after the success of the first season, she did not want to do the second, but it was also better than the previous one. – and she is sure that the third “will be even better”.
The Mexican actress – in relation to a possible fourth season – admitted that it is difficult to leave the successful series, but it is a matter that will depend on many factors and will be defined at the time by the producers and executives of the Queen of the South.
The cast that accompanies Kate del Castillo is made up of actors from 20 different nationalities such as: Humberto Zurita, Isabella Sierra, Kika Edgar, Alejandro Calva, Tiago Correa, Eduardo Yáñez, Lincoln Palomeque, Antonio Gil, Emmanuel Orenday, Cuca Escribano, Sara Vidorreta , Agata Clares and Dmitry Anisimov
The cast is completed by Noe Hernández, Horacio García Rojas, Ed Trucco, Carlos Valencia, Arturo Ríos, Denia Agalianou, Anderley Palomino, Fernando Solorzano and Victor Rebull, with the special participation of Sofia Lama, Matias Novoa, and Beth Chamberlin.
Kate del Castillo described as “incredible and beautiful” the experience of working with artists from more than 20 countries.
“It has been a beauty -he underlined- because you spend so much time working with them that we become almost like a family. We are all working outside our countries, so we are there for each other”.
He maintained that he loved what “Telemundo did with the Queen of the South – that in Bolivia, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Mexico, not only the crew of each country was hired, but also real actors from each country. That makes it so much cuter and more real.”
Can you share anecdotes during the production of the series?
Kate: «There are many anecdotes, with so many days, so many weeks filming, many things happen, both good and bad, there are accidents. We were filming during the pandemic, imagine constantly traveling to all these Latin American countries.
“Sometimes we had to do it by charter (flight), sometimes by commercial airlines. We have more than 800 people working for the Queen of the South. It’s crazy to move that many people.”
«We were in Machu Pichu, it is one of the wonders of the world, it is incredible, they reduced the crew of 300 who are in a unit to 20 people. Even I helped raise the team.
«Machu Pichu is very high. We wanted to die because of the height, it also started to rain, we had to wait a long time, the power went out, all of us with the equipment inside an umbrella waiting for the storm to pass so we could continue filming, while we were all seeing the beauty that is Machu Pichu and the beautiful energy it gives you».
