Cuba raises monkeypox cases to eight, according to official sources

(EFE).- Cuba has so far confirmed eight cases of monkeypox, most of them in Havana, official media reported Wednesday.

The figures from the Ministry of Public Health emerged from a report by the Presidency on the usual meeting between the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, with health experts, in which they address, among other issues, the monitoring of dengue and covid -19.

The report does not detail the identity of the last four monkeypox infections detected in the country, since so far the Ministry of Health had only reported four, the last one on October 1.

“In Cuba, so far eight cases have been confirmed (five in Havana, two in Cienfuegos, and one in Artemisa). They are all adults: six male and two female,” according to the official newspaper. Granma.

The last contagion reported by the health authorities corresponded to a 26-year-old health worker from the Cienfuegos province (center) who had direct contact with the third case, from that same territory.

The third is a 27-year-old woman and the previous two were a 60-year-old Cuban resident in the US, and a 50-year-old Italian tourist. He died days after testing positive for the disease in Cuba.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared this disease a “global health emergency” on July 23, when more than 16,000 infections were reported in 75 countries.

The disease, also known as monkeypox, is caused by a virus and can be transmitted from animals to humans or through close, direct contact with people who have symptoms.

The WHO reports that symptoms include fever, headache and muscle aches, low energy, swollen lymph nodes, and rashes or skin lesions.

Sick people can infect other people while they have symptoms and the virus is transmitted through body fluids (pus or blood from skin lesions), scabs and objects used by sick people.
