The Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, appointed three women on Monday to replace three resigning ministers in a government that fails to unite and is adrift.
The changes affect the Ministries of Labor, Social Development and Women, Gender and Diversity. The new Minister of Labor will be Kelly Olmos, 70, Social Development, Victoria Tolosa Paz, 49, and Women, Gender and Diversity, Ayelén Mazzina, 32, respectively.
Tolosa Paz is a leader who is especially close to Fernández, who is at the head of a government in which her vice president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, is critical of her policies, and the new economy minister, Sergio Massa, acts as a sort of prime minister to the detriment of the chief of staff, Juan Manzur, who is the one who should fulfill that function.
The change of ministers “is a product of emergencies, rather than a thoughtful move to strengthen management. The internal pressures mean that no one is comfortable in their chair,” the newspaper said. The nation in the hours before the announcement.
“Everything is ephemeral,” added analyst Martín Rodríguez Yebra. «Kirchnerism promised not to boycott the austerity plan that Sergio Massa proposed two months ago to avoid a serious macroeconomic accident. Once the initial panic has been overcome, the schedule of sacrifices that lies ahead and that threatens to cause a drain of votes to the left and right next year begins to become unbearable.
Fernández’s commitment to Tolosa Paz has its risks: entering the final year of his mandate, the Argentine president is increasingly pressured by demonstrations and street courthouses of pro-Kirchnerist groups and the hard left. Tolosa Paz must deal with this explosive social situation in a country with 100 percent annual inflation and poverty rates of around 40 percent. If he fails, the president fails.
The new minister, in addition, integrated at the beginning of Fernández’s mandate a “Hunger Table” that aimed to solve this problem in the country and sank into oblivion without knowing any conclusion or measure. She then led the list of national contested candidates in the 2021 midterm elections and was defeated by the opposition.
“Tolosa Paz was part of the table against hunger, which was a resounding failure,” he told Clarion Eduardo Belliboni, leader of the Polo Obrero, one of the most radicalized organizations, promoter of pickets and cuts and camps in the center of Buenos Aires.
This situation is also a challenge for Olmos, historical leader of the Partido Justicialista (Peronism) of the city of Buenos Aires and who at the end of his political career receives the award of a Ministry.
Mazzina will replace Elizabeth Gómez Alcorta, who resigned in protest at police action in the face of violence by Mapuche groups in Patagonia.
With these changes, Fernández slightly moderates the paradox of presenting himself as a promoter of equality and a feminist president: of 19 ministers, until now 17 were men. From this Tuesday, when the three new appointees take office, there would be 15 men and four women, including the Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti.
