National industry declines 0.6% in August

The national index of industrial production fell by 0.6% in August. There were drops in seven of the 15 locations analyzed by the Regional Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM). According to the results released today (11), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), in Pará the decrease was 6.2%, in Santa Catarina, 4.8%, in Espírito Santo, 3 .9%, in Bahia, 2.8%, Minas Gerais, 1.9%, in Paraná, 1.5%, and in Ceará, 0.8%.National industry declines 0.6% in August

The analyst at PIM Regional, Bernardo Almeida, informed that, on the supply side, among the economic factors that explain the drop, are the increase in raw materials and the shortage of supplies in some sectors, which directly influence the production chain. But, due to demand, the increase in interest weighed on, making credit more expensive and reducing investments in national industry.

Demand was also impacted by high inflation. “As much as it has slowed down, it is still at a high level, which reduces the purchasing power of families,” he noted.

Almeida also said that, even with the decrease in unemployment, remuneration is not high, which also influences the results of the industries. “The average income is at a low level. Unemployment has been falling, but occupations are low-paid. This impacts household consumption and generates impacts on the production chain,” he said.

Influence

Pará and Santa Catarina were the places surveyed that most influenced the national result with the falls recorded in August. The main negative impact in the month came from Pará, with the extractive sector (iron ore) being the main responsible for the result.

“Because it is more concentrated in this sector, a small variation can have a greater impact on the industry of Pará, which had the food sector in second place among the negative influences in the state. Pará comes from two months with positive results, with an accumulated gain of 15.2%”, he revealed.

In Santa Catarina, which was the second biggest negative influence on the national result, the cause was the fall in the production of rubber and plastic material, in addition to the machinery, appliances and electrical materials sector. “Santa Catarina comes from four months of positive results, with an accumulated gain of 8.9%”, he added.

positives

In the opposite direction, Amazonas (7%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.3%) had the main positive results. Amazonas eliminated the 4% loss accumulated in June and July, and Rio de Janeiro intensified the 1.3% expansion seen in the last month. Pernambuco was stable: (0%).

Also according to the analyst, the main result in absolute terms was that of Amazonas, the third positive influence on the national result. The growth in the state occurred after two months of negative scenarios, when there was an accumulated loss of 4%.

“The sectors of computer equipment, electronic and optical products and other transport and beverage equipment had more weight in the state’s result and are three segments with a lot of influence within the Amazonian industry”, he pondered.

With the rise in August, Rio de Janeiro was the second positive influence on the national result. “The sectors of metallurgy, pharmaceutical industry and oil derivatives were the ones that had the most weight in the growth of the industry in the state of Rio”, he stressed.

The greatest positive influence on the national industrial result came from São Paulo, the largest industrial park in the country. In August, the state advanced 2.6% compared to July, when there was a decrease of 0.4%.

For the analyst, the automotive vehicle sector had a reversal and, after having a negative influence on the São Paulo industry in July, it continued to have the greatest weight in August, but now positively. “This is a sector that has been showing caution in its production and facing adversities from economic factors, such as the shortage of inputs and the increase in raw materials. With this, an equalization between supply and demand may have generated this drop in the previous month and a recovery in August”, he analyzed.

Comparation

When the result for August of this year is compared with August 2021, the industry shows an expansion of 2.8% and a positive rate in 10 of the 15 places surveyed. In that month, Mato Grosso (29.9%) and Amazonas (13.4%) had double-digit increases, while in Espírito Santo (-12.2%) and Pará (-8.7%) there were the biggest declines. accentuated. The IBGE noted, however, that August 2022 had 23 working days, one more than the same month in 2021.

Accumulated

In the year, the result was negative in eight of the 15 places surveyed. The highlights were Pará (-8.1%) and Ceará (-4.6%), but, in the accumulated of the last 12 months, there were negative rates in 12 of the 15 areas surveyed.

Search

Since the 1970s, PIM Regional has produced short-term indicators relating to the behavior of the real product of extractive and manufacturing industries.

The IBGE informed that, monthly, the research brings indices for 14 units of the federation whose participation is of, at least, 1% in the total value of the national industrial transformation and, also for the Northeast: Amazonas, Pará, Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia , Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and the Northeast Region.
