South America appeals to its history to convince Infantino

South Americain the race for the election of the seat of the World Cup 2030, in which it competes with Spain, Portugal and the Ukraine, knows that its main plot is history. In eight years the centenary of the first World Cup will be celebrated, held in Uruguay in 1930, and it intends that where it all began, everything will return in 2030.

Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, traveled to Asunción to attend the inauguration of the Women’s High Performance Center of the Paraguayan League. In an act in which the president of the Paraguayan Republic, Mario Abdo Benítez, the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez and the 10 presidents of the South American Federations, the theme ‘World Cup 2030’ could not be absent.

Domínguez “rushed” the FIFA president, seeking his support for the election of Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay as the venue for 2030.

“One always fights for the most luxurious, the most beautiful and the most modern, but we would not have been here, nor would the World Cup have been what it is, nor your position (as FIFA president), Gianni (Infantino), nor mine, nor that of Robert (Harrison, president of the Paraguayan Football League), nor that of any of them so important (the rest of the presidents of South American football), if many years ago, those who preceded us, Rimet and all the leaders who dreamed that a World Cup could be held and a country like Uruguay that in record time built a stadium (Montevideo’s Centennial), with immigrants and said that a World Cup could be held. If they had not dreamed, there would not have been If we bring these leaders to the present, they will not be able to understand the magnitude that FIFA, UEFA, CONMEBOL, and all the confederations achieved, if they had not made that first championship a reality,” said President Alejandro Domínguez.

Centennial there is only one

Domínguez doubled the bet and turned to Infantino again. “I think it is worthy that FIFA itself assumes the responsibility of carrying out a gesture to honor that memory. There are luxurious stadiums, there are modern stadiums, there are countries that can make a replica of the Centenario (Stadium), but Centenario there is only one in the World. History cannot be bought with money, luxury does not make history. What we can promise the world is to go back to its origins and show where it was born and how it was played. I invite you to hold a World Cup here in 2030, which It’s played how it was played in 1930, with the same outfits, and not fighting over luxuries. It’s going back to its essence. South America is ready, the 4 countries are ready to bring the World Cup in 2030”.

They support his reelection at the head of FIFA

Infantino’s presence in South America was also propitious for the 10 South American Federations to announce their support for the re-election of the current FIFA president in March 2023.

The 2030 World Cup, which will mark the hundredth anniversary of the First World Cup, has two candidates: Spain, Portugal and Ukraine, and, on the other hand, the 4 South Americans, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile. On May 23, the candidacies must be formally presented, and by the end of 2024, the chosen venue will be announced.
