OVP: Prisoners of the Tocuyito prison eliminate sentence reductions already granted

The relatives who dared to raise their voices for this measure, which they consider irregular and inexplicable, sent a statement to the Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) and also filed a written complaint with the president of the Carabobo state Judicial Circuit.

The Venezuelan Prison Observatory (OVP) denounced that a group of prisoners serving sentences in the Carabobo Judicial Confinement Center —also known as Tocuyito— had redemptions (sentence reductions) already granted withdrawn, through which they would have seen a reduction in their sentences.

According to a Press release published by the observatory, execution judges of the criminal judicial circuit of Carabobo eliminated redemptions that had already been granted by other judges, in an act that, according to the families of those affected, is unconstitutional.

A group of family members, who did not want to identify themselves for fear of reprisals against their loved ones in prison, sent a statement this weekend to the Venezuelan Prison Observatory to denounce these decisions, which, they say, have no legal basis and only cause discomfort in the community. prison population of this detention center.

Criminal redemptions are reductions in the prisoner’s sentence for a variety of reasons validated by Venezuelan law, such as work or academic work within the prison. This right is enshrined in the Law on Judicial Redemption of the penalty for work and study, approved in 1993.

The OVP explains that “every convict can benefit from a reduced sentence, as long as he has studied during his time in prison or has done voluntary work.”

The relatives of the affected prisoners point out that article 3 establishes that the inmates “may redeem their sentence with work and study at the rate of one day of imprisonment for every two (2) days of work or study, the persons sentenced to penalties or correctional measures restricting liberty.

In the Carabobo Judicial Detention Center these activities are carried out to reduce the sentence and several judges signed redemptions in this regard. However, for two years, the execution judges proceeded to eliminate all the previous redemption decisions issued by the previous judges.

“This is to the detriment of all those deprived of liberty who had achieved their benefits with constant effort, studying and working, in search of their transformation and adaptation to a new and better life,” the relatives denounced in the letter sent to the observatory.

They also pointed out that “this decision has created discomfort and restlessness in those deprived of liberty who until now have dedicated themselves to serving their sentences.”

The family members who dared to raise their voices for this measure, which they consider irregular and inexplicable, also filed their complaint in writing with the president of the Carabobo State Judicial Circuit, so that the benefits of their loved ones are not unknown.
