Within the framework of the Sustainable Peru sustainability event, the researcher affiliated with the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy, Zachary Wendling, referred to the Environmental Performance Index 2022 (EPI for its acronym in English) and highlighted the country as a world leader in marine resource management.
It is worth mentioning that the EPI is a study carried out by researchers from Yale and Columbia universities that measures the state of sustainability in 180 countries within 11 categories and where Peru ranks fourth in the state of fish stocks. and the eleventh position in sustainable performance in the fishing sector.
For Wendling, the results lie in the current regulation that promotes the use of data and scientific evidence on the health of the resources as a determining factor to determine the action on the resource. This has allowed an exponential growth not only of industrial fishing, such as the one based on anchovy.
“The world in general, and especially the leading economies, are behind in their strategies to avoid overfishing and adequately protect marine fauna. Peru is an exceptional case, because by not having so many resources, it has been presenting notable results in its management”, indicates.
“Sustainable management is a substantial contribution to PBI since these initiatives require the creation of jobs and the strengthening of marine biodiversity. Peru has known how to avoid past mistakes and cautiously cares for the stability of the food chain of its marine species”, added the researcher.
Importantly, EPI indicators provide a way to spot problems, set targets, track trends, understand results, and identify best policy practices.
Good data and fact-based analysis can also help government officials refine their policy agendas, facilitate communications with key stakeholders, and maximize return on environmental investments.
In this way, it becomes a powerful policy tool in support of efforts to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals and to move society towards a sustainable future.
