Venezuela joins the Milan Food Policy Pact

The Milan Food Policy Pact was established in 2015 with more than 100 municipalities committed to the development of a global strategic plan

The municipality of San Carlos, de Cojedes, became the first town in Venezuela to join the Milan Food Policy Pact, a strategic plan that seeks to improve the mechanisms for producing food and creating sustainable and economically viable diets in the populations that comprise it .

This year’s meeting was attended by the president of the Society of Agricultural Engineers of Venezuela (Sviaa) and the mayor of the San Carlos municipality, Alexander Mireles, representing Venezuela and with the intention of integrating the municipality into this pact.

López explained that the meeting highlighted issues such as governance, the promotion of sustainable and healthy diets from a nutritional point of view, prioritizing the gastronomic culture of the different localities that are part of the pact.

In the case of San Carlos, various reforms are necessary to implement a functional agri-food production system, despite the benefits offered by the lands of Cojedes.

“In San Carlos there should be a lot of food using mangoes, economic social equity, food production that goes more towards consulting and training small producers. We are also going to promote from Sviaa a certification process for agroecological agriculture,” said López.

“We are in the decade of nutrition and the support that urban areas have to generate conducive food environments is very important,” he declared, later indicating that in Milan they were able to see innovative experiences and projects to achieve this goal.

Through a conversation with the director of the pact, Filippo Gavazzeni, actions were agreed so that Venezuela can replicate successful experiences in food policies that can be executed in San Carlos.

The Milan Food Policy Pact was established in 2015 with more than 100 municipalities committed to the development of a global strategic plan. In the last seven years, another 105 municipalities have been added, including one Venezuelan.
