Political prisoner Yandy Hernández “is in danger” in prison, says his wife

Yandy Hernández

MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban political prisoner Yandy Hernandez Montes de Ocaa protester on July 11, 2021 (J11) in Güira de Melena, Artemisa province, would be in serious condition due to an untreated infection in one of his legs, according to his wife on social networks.

In a video broadcast on social networks by the journalist Maite Luna, the woman points out that the inmate is going through “a delicate situation” since he has not received medical treatment in prison.

“This video is for the international community and for those people who can make the Cuban authorities reflect. My husband is in a delicate situation. I just paid 16,000 Cuban pesos for 16 bulbs of Rocephin, since in prison they don’t have it or they don’t want to give it to them,” said the prisoner’s wife.

Faced with this situation, the woman asked the prison authorities to transfer her wife to a hospital.

“To the prison health authorities: my husband needs a transfer to a hospital. My husband is in danger. The Cuban government must respect the Mandela Rules and give it the required treatment.”

Hernández Montes de Oca’s wife also said that, in these circumstances, she fears for the inmate’s life.

“His leg is oozing infection. We are bad because we talk and it’s for pleasure, nobody attends to us. What we are experiencing is unfair. I fear for his life. Me and his mother are desperate because we fear for his life”.

Despite suffering from wear and tear on the central nervous system, Yandy Hernández Montes de Oca was sentenced to 13 years in prison for his participation in the 11J protests. As several specialists have explained to his wife, the disease he suffers from is characterized by promoting depressive events in the patient, in which suicidal ideas can be frequent.

Prior to the events of 11J, Yandy Hernández Montes de Oca worked as a farm worker. At 29 years old, he is the father of a family made up of his wife and his two children, a nine-year-old boy and a one-and-a-half-year-old girl.

After his arrest, the wife of the political prisoner applied for help from Social Security, but this was denied.
