The president of the Alliance Foundation for Health and Road Safety (Asvil), Ramon Leonel Urenaaffirmed yesterday that driver education and the regime of consequences are fundamental to face the incidence of mortality due to traffic accidents
He recalled that the province of La Altagracia occupies the fifth place with the highest mortality and injuries due to this cause, in most cases due to the recklessness of drivers.
alert call
In this context, the health specialist called on the authorities of the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (DIGESETT) and the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation (INTRANT) to comply with the law and its regulations, especially in relation to vehicle technical inspection.
Likewise, it considers it appropriate to establish greater surveillance on highways, to avoid speeding, which is one of the main causes of these unfortunate events.
Similarly, the health professional and expert in road matters suggests that technology should be used as a control mechanism.
“Speed is the risk factor that most affects traffic accidents,” he said.

As an example, he cited the accident that occurred recently in the province of La Altagracia, where it was determined that in addition to the high speed of the driver, the tires were in poor condition, which constitutes a “time bomb”.
“It is necessary that important sectors such as tourism take charge of ensuring that tourist transport is kept in good condition, so that tires, brakes and lights, among others, do not constitute a risk,” said Ureña.
Likewise, he said that it is necessary to apply the psychophysical examination to the drivers, in order to establish if they are mentally and physically fit to assume this kind of responsibility.
“We must ensure the physical and mental health of these drivers so that they have exact control of how to drive a vehicle,” he added.
Then, he added: “From time to time we are seeing these sinisters so spectacular that at an international level they put the Dominican Republic to shame.”
He insisted on pointing out that the province of La Altagracia occupies the fifth place in the highest number of traffic accidents. Before there are the province of Santo Domingo, the National District, La Vega and San Cristóbal.
“We regret that these events occur,” he emphasized when referring to the accident that occurred in the east of the country in which several foreign tourists lost their lives, while some 20 were injured.
pillars
According to what has been explained, speed reduction is one of the five fundamental pillars for true road safety.
The others are: roads in good condition, vehicle in good condition, law enforcement and road safety management.
