A day after Russia’s Putin accused Ukraine of being responsible for an explosion at a crucial Crimean bridge, a series of devastating explosions rocked central kyiv on Monday morning, shattering months of comparative calm in the Ukrainian city.
According to initial reports, at least eight people were killed and 24 wounded in just one of the attacks on kyiv, according to Rostyslav Smirnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.
Intense attacks on targets across Ukraine began with the explosions in kyiv, and conflicting accounts indicate that suicide missiles or drones were responsible for the explosions.
In a statement posted on Telegram, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said there had been “multiple explosions in the Shevchenkiv district in the center of the capital.”
Later, he said there had been “many hits on key city infrastructure objects” and there had been casualties.
A snapshot shared on Twitter by Ukrainian parliamentarian Lesia Vasylenko revealed that at least one explosion occurred near the main building of the kyiv National University in the center of the city.
