A group of neighbors came to the Government and tried to remove those who came from Porongo to set up a vigil for almost a week. In that interim and to avoid clashes, the Police had to intervene. On one front are the neighbors, on the other the strikers and in the middle the police officers.
The vigil that community members and residents of Porongo have been holding for a week, approximately, in the Government demands the repeal of Law 208, which declares the area as a Natural Heritage Conservation Unit. The norm, approved during the management of Rubén Costas, tries to preserve the aquifers that would supply water to the city.
The controversial law establishes Protected Passage an area of 44,711.09 hectares, located between the municipalities of Porongo, Buena Vista and Portachuelo. with this law “any work, activity or infrastructure project that tends to modify the course or natural flow and the river basin is prohibited.” located in the Guendá- Urubó Natural Heritage Conservation Unit, for constituting the vital source of the entire ecosystem and biodiversity”, since the aquifers located in the area provide 60% of water that the people of Cruceños consume.
For their part, the neighbors who came to the Departmental Government building They demand the withdrawal of this vigil that obstructs the entrance to the institution.
The discussions between one side and the other have caused more than one threat of confrontation, which has led the Police to intervene on the spot. It is so the section from the second roundabout to the first ring of Omar Chávez Avenue has been closed, private vehicles as well as public transport are diverting traffic through surrounding streets.
It should be noted that last week Technicians from the Government sat on one side, and on the other: the technical and legal team of the community members and the Land and Labor Committee that represents the protesters. The Government was emphatic in its position not to repeal Departmental Law 208, however, it gave alternatives for the construction of the road section on other routes.
