The Corinthians climbed this Saturday to second place in the Brazilian league by defeating 2-1 Athletico Paranaense, on the thirty-first day of the championship. Paraguayan defender Fabián Balbuena, with a header, and Roger Guedes, with a penalty, scored the goals for Corinthians against the team led by Luiz Felipe Scolari, finalist in the Copa Libertadores.
With their victory, Corinthians reached 54 points, twelve behind the leader, Palmeiras, a club that dominates the league with authority and that on Monday visits Atlético Goianiense. Paranaense was in sixth place in the league with 46 points, five short of the qualifying positions for the Copa Libertadores.
In the other match brought forward to this Saturday, Flamengo defeated Cuiabá at home by 1-2, with goals from Matheus França and Marinho, in a match in which the team from Rio de Janeiro played with the substitutes, to reserve strength for the first leg of the Brazilian Cup final, which will be played next Wednesday against Corinthians.
Flamengo is in fourth place in the league, with 52 points, while Cuiabá remains in the relegation places, with 30.
