He was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 2018 and since the end of 2020 he has been living with the most serious consequences of the disease.
Known as ALS, it affects 5 out of 100,000 people worldwide.
This type of sclerosis is an incurable disease that causes progressive deterioration of patients who suffer from it. It weakens the muscles and affects physical functions, they lose mobility and have breathing difficulties.
In most cases the causes of the disease are unknown and symptoms are unlikely to appear before age 30.
The most common cause of death in patients with ALS is respiratory failure, which occurs when the chest muscles stop working.
The day of death chosen by Sepúlveda with the support of his only son and other family members and friends, was October 7, but once his case was made public, the clinic and EPS stopped the procedure.
With judicial methods they stopped the process that had already been approved. They sent a new scientific committee for review.
At the end of it, Martha Sepúlveda a judge gave him light of hope it was just that she chose the date. And he did, in silence.
