Cuba donates doses of its three vaccines against covid-19 to Syria

(EFE) .- Cuba sent this Friday to Syria a donation of 120,000 doses of its vaccine against covid-19 Abdala and an unspecified number of its other two formulas against the coronavirus, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus, to help contain the pandemic in the Arab nation.

“We are sure that these vaccines will help reduce the impact of the pandemic in this sister country,” said the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment of Cuba, Ana Teresita González, from the runway of the José Martí International Airport in Havana, in where the shipment left.

Syria thus joins other countries such as Nicaragua, Venezuela, Iran, Vietnam and Mexico that apply the formulas against the coronavirus developed in Cuban scientific institutions.

Abdala, designed by the state-run Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, achieved an efficacy of 92.2% in clinical trials, according to its manufacturers.

This vaccine, which gets its name from a poem by José Martí, has an intramuscular administration schedule of three doses in 28 days.

Meanwhile, Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus, produced by the Finlay Vaccine Institute also state-owned, showed, according to their producers, an efficacy of 91.2% when combining two doses of the first and another to reinforce the second.

The efficacy rates of these three formulas have not been confirmed by independent external experts. Cuba is waiting for the authorization of its three vaccines by the World Health Organization (WHO).
