Two young people are convicted of money laundering and other crimes

Justice sentenced two young people for the crimes of money laundering and internal arms trafficking after two years of investigations that began with the arrest of these people.

The arrest occurred in July 2020 when police officers from Zone IV of Montevideo saw two people aboard a high-powered motorcycle without license plates or lights while driving through the Colón neighborhood, so they asked them to stop. The motorcycle driver disobeyed the order, leading to a pursuit.

The suspects fled by road to Las Piedras. Upon reaching the jurisdiction of Canelones, agents from said department joined the chase, who helped put an end to it in the vicinity of Elías Regules and Borrazas streets, when a police van crossed the path of the motorcycle, which caused a crash and fall of fugitives.

The young people tried to flee on foot, but the police stopped them. Upon reviewing them, they found 113,000 pesos and 15,000 dollars, as well as two firearms and the motorcycle on which they were riding, which was listed as stolen in Montevideo.

Sentence

Finally, after two years of investigation, the Prosecutor’s Office was able to verify the commission of the crimes of money laundering and internal trafficking of weapons and ammunition in the form of receiving in real competition with one crime of contempt and two of receiving.

Both Jordan Machado, 23, and Luis Almeida, 25, who have criminal records, received convictions. In the case of the former, the penalty corresponds to two years and eight months in prison, which was replaced by probation. On the other hand, the second was sentenced to two years and ten months of effective prison.
