Cuban basketball player Leydis Oquendo dies after surgery

Cuban basketball player Leydis Oquendo died this Wednesday in El Salvador due to postoperative pulmonary thrombosis. According to the coach Rainel Panfet, a fibroma that was detected in the athlete “was the origin of the unpleasant outcome”, public Full Swing.

Oquendo, 40, underwent surgery in the Central American country, where she recently finished as the leading scorer in the local tournament. Yohanni Baldo Flores, husband of the athlete from Camagüey, told the basketball specialist Lázaro Sierra Betanzos that after the surgery there were “multiple complications.”

Panfet published the image of a starry sky on his social networks, noting that he still did not believe the news. “I still don’t believe it, this has been disastrous.”

The surprising death of the athlete from the municipality of Florida immediately had reactions. Marlene Cepeda, a friend and former partner of Oquendo, shared a photo of both athletes smiling on her Facebook account. “That’s how I’m going to remember you, my black.”

Cepeda recalled that they spent hours talking “trying to fix the world” and one is never prepared to receive bad news. “Damn, Leydis never imagined, my black, that I would never see you again, but wherever you are, always remember what you told me: ‘Baby, being strong is the only option left to us’. I love you, my black “.

another coach, emilio maceira highlighted Leydis Oquendo as a figure of Cuban basketball, but “perhaps it would be better to talk about his qualities as a person. Undisputed leader of his group of athletes. Jovial, disciplined, friend and companion, humble people but with great feelings and in short a great woman we have lost.

“We are dismayed by his physical disappearance, it is a hard blow for the Cuban basketball family and sports in general,” said Dalia Henry, president of the Cuban federation of this discipline. “We are very sorry for your loss.”

Oquendo won the Central American and Caribbean games twice and the Centrobasquet tournament five times (2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012).

She started in basketball at the age of 16 and due to her qualities she was included in national pre-selections, in addition to participating in the world championships in Brazil 2006 and Turkey 2014.

Precisely, her sporting ability allowed her to leave Cuba and play in the leagues of Argentina, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador, where, Maceira said, the athlete had been based for years as an “independent player.”
