The Ministers of Defense, Javier García, and of Social Development, Martín Lema, agreed on the details of the logistics operation for the distribution of food in five municipalities of Montevideo, starting on Friday the 7th. The process foresees the delivery of duplicate receipts as a measure of transparency. It is an essential control to guarantee “that the food reaches where it has to go,” said García.
In the meeting held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense, the ministers were accompanied by the Undersecretary of Social Development, Andrea Brugman, and the director of the National Food Institute (INDA), Ignacio Elgue.
During the meeting, the authorities planned the logistical support of the Armed Forces to the food plan of the Ministry of Social Development (Mides).
Thus, the troops will collaborate with a primary need and the State will guarantee the continuity of the food supply chain to picnic areas and popular pots, explained García.
In a first instance, there will be five distribution points. The vehicles will depart from the Uruguay Adelante depot and will travel through municipalities A, D, E, F, and G, in Montevideo
Garcia reported that the start of activities is scheduled for Friday, October 7 in the morning. He estimated that some 20 tons of food will be distributed, once a week, at delivery points designated by Mides. In addition to the distribution, the military personnel will participate in the preparation of shipments in the warehouse, on Wednesday and Thursday.
In order to emphasize the transparency of the activity, at the time of delivery to the picnic area or popular pot, a two-way receipt will be made. One of them will remain in the hands of the Ministry of Defense and another in the property of Mides. The document will include the data of the recipient and the merchandise received.
“It is a control that we consider essential”, because it is a significant volume of food, which are public resources. “You have to guarantee that the food gets to where it needs to get to,” he pointed out.
