The daily life of the Nicaraguan exile Xaviera Molina was portrayed in the documentary the other wave, recorded and produced by the Divergentes multimedia platform. The young woman arrived in San José, Costa Rica, fleeing the state repression of the Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo regime unleashed during the 2018 social protests.
Xaviera arrived in the neighboring country to the south to protect his life after the so-called “Cleaning Operation” in Jinotepe, Carazo. Once in Costa Rica, she learned that her grandfather had also gone through exile in the face of political violence and economic crisis in Nicaragua in past decades. Her grandfather’s grave is in that country, her second homeland.
Xaviera is the mother of two girls. She is part of the new generation of political exiles who historically come to Costa Rica to reinvent themselves. The search for a roof is the main goal of the young exile, while she deals with her wounds, a complex economic situation, with two little girls who suffer exile and the vicissitudes of inserting themselves into a foreign society.

“Xaviera’s story is also the story of thousands of Nicaraguans seeking new opportunities in Costa Rica. A story that is repeated in every student, mother, activist, doctor, journalist, in every person who flees political violence in Nicaragua,” said Néstor Arce, executive producer and director of Divergents.
The documentary lasts 47 minutes, according to its producers, an observational technique was used that allows reflecting the daily life of the protagonists, replacing interviews in front of the camera, immersing themselves in their daily dynamics to learn about their history and those around them. Costa Rica has received more than 180,000 refugee applications from Nicaraguans who fled the social, political, economic and human rights crisis in the country.
“We could not cover so many stories that exile represents for many Nicaraguans in Costa Rica, but through Xaviera we were able to get to know a network of people who support each other and let us portray a little of their day-to-day experiences,” the team points out. of production.
The Other Wave is a binational production and the post-production was in charge of Alonso Víquez and Mamahilda Estudio. In the executive production were Néstor Arce, Carlos Herrera and Wilfredo Miranda Aburto, co-founders of Divergentes.
