MIAMI, United States. – On the last day, Cuban activists have made visible the case of the visual artist and tattoo artist José Adalberto Fernández Cañizares, Pepitin, violently arrested last October 1 after demonstrating in the vicinity of Línea Street, in Havana’s Vedado.

The 38-year-old was arrested “by police dressed in civilian clothes on the night of October 1, like other young people, in the vicinity of his house in Havana’s Vedado, after returning from the peaceful protest that took place near Línea and F”, specified on Facebook the visual artist Julio Llópiz Casal.

Currently, he is in the police station at 100 and Aldabó, where he was taken after receiving medical attention, added Llópiz Casal.

“The State Security criminals broke bones in his face, where he currently has 37 stitches. He is being accused of crimes that he did not commit, that the Cuban government fabricates to justify his cowardice, his criminality and his inefficiency,” the artist wrote.

He also assured that it could be himself or any of his friends. “It doesn’t matter if the Communist Party of Cuba is willing to do ‘EVERYTHING’ in order to stay in power after 63 years; what does matter is that he is willing to engage in physical and political violence, even if death is collateral damage,” he lamented.

“Like me and so many of my friends, he was born in 1984. Like me and so many of my friends, he is a visual artist and tries to survive as a visual artist in a country where survival becomes more of a luxury every day”, wrote Llopiz Casal.

For her part, the activist Salomé García Bacallao, from the group Justicia 11J, pointed to the group DISAPPEARED #SOSCuba that it was known, thanks to the doctor who treated him at the Calixto García Hospital, that the 38-year-old had a split septum and cheek.

Fernández Cañizares demonstrated at the corner of the Hotel Presidente, in Havana’s Vedado, where he shouted “Freedom”, “Homeland and Life” and other slogans.
