Opponents call for "forceful actions" against Ortega in the OAS General Assembly

Fifteen opposition organizations from Nicaragua demanded this Monday that the member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) take “forceful actions” against the government of President Daniel Ortega during the 52nd General Assembly of the OAS, which will be held from January 5 to 7. October in Lima.

“We, the signatory organizations, demand that the member states of the OAS, which are meeting this week in Peru, take forceful actions against the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship,” advocated that group of organizations, including the Civic Alliance for Justice and the Democracy and the Blue and White National Unity, in a public statement.

Among others, these organizations requested that the OAS resolution of November 12, 2021 be retaken, in which the States declared that the elections of November 7 of last year held in Nicaragua “were not free, fair or transparent and did not have democratic legitimacy”, in order to declare “the current Ortega-Murillo regime illegitimate”.

They also asked that they “react to the illegal takeover of the OAS offices in Managua by the regime”, a building that was expropriated last April and that the Sandinista government handed over to a state university.

“Resolutions or declarations of intent are no longer enough. Note that the serious violations of human rights continue, including the illegal arrest of more than 200 people who live in inhumane conditions and torture in the regime’s prisons”, they warned.

CONDITIONS INTERNATIONAL LOANS

Likewise, they urged international financial organizations to condition all financing to Nicaragua “on respect for human rights by the Ortega Murillo regime.”

In addition, they asked the OAS to propose a monitoring mechanism to address the “forced displacement that affects about 10% of the Nicaraguan population,” estimated at 6.6 million inhabitants, “fleeing from repression and economic ruin.” ”.

Other requests are to establish a special high-level mechanism on Nicaragua that permanently monitors compliance with OAS resolutions, and consider the application of Articles 19 and 21 of the Democratic Charter.

Nicaragua announced on April 24 its decision to withdraw the credentials of its representatives to the OAS, as well as the closure of the offices of that organization in Managua.

That decision came three days after the Permanent Council of the OAS, with the absence of Nicaragua, approved suspending Russia, its ally, as a permanent observer, in punishment for the invasion of Ukraine and in a bid to further isolate Moscow. at the international level.

That day Nicaragua ratified its “invariable decision” to abandon the OASa measure adopted from November 19, 2021 and that will take two years to be effective, that is, until November 2023.

That measure was adopted after the member countries of the OAS approved in the General Assembly held in November of last year a resolution condemning Nicaragua for the elections that same month in which Ortega prevailed and that they considered that “they were not free , fair or transparent and do not have democratic legitimacy”.

Ortega, a former guerrilla fighter close to turning 77 and who returned to power in 2007, was re-elected for his fifth five-year term and fourth in a row, along with his wife, Rosario Murillo, as vice president, in those November elections, which failed. the recognition of much of the international community.
