Air Canada suspends its flights to Havana and reservations to other Cuban destinations

The new wave of covid-19 has forced the suspension of Air Canada flights to most Caribbean destinations, including Cuba. The airline announced in a release that their routes from January 24 to April 30, 2022 are canceled.

In addition to Havana, trips to Antigua, Aruba, Samaná, Curaçao, Exuma, Granada, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, Bermuda, Grand Cayman, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Martin and Saint Kitts and Nevis also stop.

The company has announced that it plans a series of commercial return flights for Canadians who may be stranded in one of those destinations when their return flight is suspended. In addition, those affected by the cancellations will receive a refund of the tickets once the Air Canada team contacts them in order of date.

The airline’s statement reminds passengers who need to return to Canada that mobility restrictions are still in force, including the presentation of the document that proves they have been vaccinated and the negative result of PCR in covid-19.

“The decision, designed to achieve an orderly reduction in service and minimize customer impact, was made in collaboration with the Government of Canada.”

“The decision, designed to achieve an orderly reduction in service and minimize customer impact, was made in collaboration with the Government of Canada,” the company adds.

The situation is unclear with the rest of destinations to Cuba, since the Air Canada website has only published the suspension to Havana, but it is not allowed to book from Montreal or Toronto to Cayo Coco, Holguín, Santa Clara or Varadero, the regular company journeys.

This January, Air Canada had scheduled flights on Sundays from Montreal to Havana on Sundays and Monday to Toronto. To Varadero from Montreal on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Thursdays. And from Toronto on Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Even the Santa Clara airport had flights from Toronto on Thursdays and from Montreal on Tuesdays. To Cayo Coco, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays there were flights scheduled from Montreal and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from Toronto. Finally, from Montreal I flew to Holguín on Thursdays and from Toronto on Mondays.

Before the pandemic, Canadian tourists were the largest group of foreign travelers to Cuba, so if the suspension of all company flights were confirmed, it would be very bad news for one of the largest sources of income. of the State. However, WestJet, Air Transat and Sunwing also fly between Canada and Cuba.

The latter announced precisely this Thursday that it will resume flights from Halifax (Nova Scotia province), both to Cuba and the Dominican Republic as of next week, but the rise in covid-19 cases in the world and the Caribbean puts in check again to the beaten sector.
