MIAMI, United States.- The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported this Monday that the probability that two new tropical waves, one located in the eastern Atlantic and the other east of the Windward Islands, will transform this week into tropical depressions increased.

According to the latest reportsa prolonged area of low pressure located a few hundred miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms, but environmental conditions are forecast to be favorable for gradual development.

“A tropical depression is likely to form in the middle of this week. Further development will be less likely by the end of the week due to increased upper-level winds,” the NHC said Monday.

This system is forecast to move west, then turn northwest or north by the end of the week over the eastern tropical Atlantic.

For its part, the other tropical wave, located east of the Windward Islands, has been better organized since Sunday and is likely to become a tropical depression in the coming days as it moves west at 15 to 20 mph, and reach the Windward Islands and enter the western Caribbean Sea.

According to the NHC report, the probability of formation in 48 hours is 30% and in five days it is 40%.

Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) projected that 14 to 20 named storms (winds of 39 mph or more) would form this year, of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or more) and of those 3-5 could become major hurricanes (winds of 111 mph or more).

So far, a month into the current Atlantic hurricane season, nine tropical storms and four hurricanes have formed. One of them, Hurricane Ian, affected Pinar del Río last weekas a category 3, and then reached the west coast of Florida as a category 4.
