The Paraguayan politician and diplomat, María José Argaña, highlighted that the result obtained by Mario Abdo Benítez, with the outstanding opening of the Odesur 2022 games, was a legacy left by the Horacio Cartes administration, since it was during this management that he applied to our country and the steps were taken to direct its election as the venue.

The Colorado politician shared her tweet by attaching a note from November 15, 2017, in which then-president Horacio Cartes addressed the president of the South American Sports Organization, Camilo Pérez López, to inform him that the Paraguayan Olympic Committee unanimously resolved to apply for the city of Asunción as the venue for the 2022 South American Games.
“Considering the importance of the nomination and making it official, in my capacity as President of the Republic of Paraguay, I support the aforementioned application, guaranteeing the necessary resources for its realization,” reads the document sent by Cartes.
At the time this note was sent, María José Argaña held the position of ambassador to Portugal, after her time as a diplomat in Ecuador, for which she is aware of the hard work carried out by said administration, which paid off with the realization in our country of the Odesur 2022 Games.
It must be remembered that Paraguay received the flag of the South American Games in June 2019 from the previous organizer, Bolivia. However, the country decided to give up hosting a month later. Later, in September, Marito he backed down on his decision and reconsidered the question again.
