“There is no bread, there is no water, there is nothing”: this is the critical situation in several towns of Pinar del Río

Pinar del Río, Cuba

MIAMI, United States. – Inhabitants of communities in Pinar del Rio and activists who have come to that province to support the work of assisting those affected by the passage of Hurricane Ian warned about the critical situation in that territory.

A contingent of artists and cultural coordinators visited several towns in San Juan and Martínez this Sunday. The activists verified the damage caused by the meteor, as well as the inhuman living conditions in which the inhabitants of that municipality find themselves.

“All the houses are in total collapse, there is no food, not many of the authorities have arrived,” cultural activist Yoelkis Torres Tapanes declared in a video during a visit to the town of Campo Alegre.

According to Torres, the residents of Campo Alegre lack not only basic services, but also food.

“The food supply has not entered: there is no bread, there is no water, there is nothing,” said the young man, who also confirmed that the main authorities of the province have not appeared in the area.

“No one has come to find out what they need or what they have lost,” he added.

The playwright Iran Capote Fuente, who was also part of the entourage, recounted on social networks the difficult situation in which Campo Alegre and other popular councils such as Punta de Cartas and La Tea find themselves.

“The environment hurts. Those communities are destroyed. It hurts to think how long the recovery might take. It hurts to think, it hurts. That’s why all the effort to lighten those faces a little. Of all the areas visited so far these are the most destroyed. We urge all people, institutions, humanitarian aid groups, NGOs, who want to add their help. These residents need such basic things as drinking water, food, and medicine,” the artist wrote in his profile on Facebook.

During their visit, the brigade of activists delivered donations and food to the victims, and carried out various cultural activities for the children of those towns in western Cuba.
