The Olympic medalist, Julio Mayora, and the junior world champion, Katherine Echandía, awarded Venezuela the first gold medals on the first day of the South American Games, in its 12th edition.
Echandía prevailed in the 49-kilogram category, totaling 187 kilos, followed by the Brazilian, Natasha Figueiredo with 186 and the Colombian, Yineth Santoya, with 160. Mayora, meanwhile, lifted 140 kg in the snatch, 171 kg in the clean and jerk and 311 kg in total to reaffirm himself as the best in South America.

On the first day, the also Venezuelan, Reinner Arango, broke two South American records in the youth category, in the 67 Kg category by having a start of 131 kg, 146 kg in clean and jerk, for a total of 297 kg, and took over the bronze medal.
The sporting event takes place in Pavilion I of the SND in Paraguay.
