In Pinar del Río there are 228 families who have nowhere to return

MIAMI, United States.- Hurricane Ian left in Pinar del Río some 228 evacuated families who have nowhere to return and almost 30,000 damaged homes, of which more than 2,200 are total landslides, according to a report published this Saturday by the official website Cubadebate.

The figures were revealed by the president of the Provincial Defense Council, Yamilé Ramos Cordero, who reported that 1,959 people were still evacuated between family homes and centers set up for that purpose.

“We have identified 228 families who have nowhere to return to,” Ramos Cordero said at a meeting held this Saturday afternoon, which was headed by Miguel Díaz-Canel from Havana.

The official added that of the 29,561 homes where been able to detect damage2,213 are total collapses and the purpose is to advance during the weekend in detecting the greatest amount of damage, which will enable the delivery of construction materials more quickly.

For its part, regarding the recovery of the electrical service, during the meeting it was announced that on this Saturday afternoon it had only been possible to restore the energy to 1.6% of the clients. Ramos Cordero explained that in Pinar del Río the effects on the system will take several days to be fully resolved.

In this regard, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Liván Arronte Cruz, said that the most complex situation is in that western province: there are almost 4,000 poles on the ground and some 500 transformers down.

The Minister of Education, Ena Elsa Velázquez Cobiella, said that more than 80% of the schools received some type of impact, especially the primary ones, but “assured that on a tour carried out on Saturday she was able to verify that the teachers and professors they are cleaning and creating conditions to restart the school year.”

“In 280 schools, students will be able to return to their classrooms next Tuesday, and in those that do not have the conditions to receive them, alternatives are sought in family homes or work centers that can welcome students as soon as possible, until their educational institutions are ready. ”, explains the official report.

Next Monday the school year will resume in the provinces of Havana, Artemisa and Mayabeque, as well as in the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.
