Today you can visit the former Cabildo Prison Memory Site, the first women’s prison in Uruguay, and the first prison for political prisoners. Acevedo Diaz and Nicaragua.
The Cabildo prison worked between October 1968 and until 1977, as a place of political confinement for women. In that period it was managed by the Congregation of the Good Shepherd and, after the escape of political prisoners in 1970, also by the female police of the Montevideo Headquarters. The two escapes of political prisoners, known as “The escape of the pigeons” (March 8, 1970) and “The escape of the stars” (July 30, 1971), were organized by the MLN-T. In 1977, the political prisoners were transferred to the Punta de Rieles prison, and it remained in operation for the detention of social prisoners.
On March 17, 2017, the Special Commission of Law 18,596 marked this place with a plaque as a tribute and reparation. On July 17, 2019, the National Honorary Commission of Memory Sites-Law 19,641 decided to declare a Memory Site a space within the property, where part of the cell and a visitor patio were located.
