At only 17 years old and with 11 songs on Spotify, the singer from Potosí Yarit exceeds 23,000 monthly listeners on the streaming music platform and his most watched video clip, titled Ya es historia, passes five million views on YouTube, figures that few Bolivian artists can achieve.
Although some people discovered him a few weeks ago for his controversial performance in the Breathe Bolivia festival, the young singer-songwriter takes note of the technical failures, added to nervousness and a cold, so as not to repeat the mistakes and intends to show that there is much more to talk about him.
– What is your version of what happened in Respira Bolivia?
I had nerve and throat problems. You may think I’m excusing myself, but it was the first time I’d stepped on a stage of this magnitude and my emotions played tricks on me.
– As happened to other characters, did the controversy increase your followers?
Yes, it brought good and bad fame. But I know what I’m capable of and I’m going to take the good side of the bad, taking advice and constructive criticism and laughing at the humor that some put into it. There were comments with bad intentions, but I will show them that better things will come.
– How long have you been in music?
I’ve been making music since I was seven years old, but in my forties I realized that I was born for this, that this was my happy place and where I saw myself in the future.
– Where does Yarit come from?
Yarit Abdul Leaño Garabito comes from a very humble, simple and loving family, which I always have in front of me. If I had to choose only one thing in the world, I would choose my family.
Yarit has toured almost all of Bolivia and Peru with his music
– Music is an expensive job at the beginning, how did you come up?
Before, I had no money, so my first songs were produced by me. When you work on what you are passionate about, the economic issue is secondary.
I thank my mom who saw me obsessed during the pandemic, studying how to compose or record voices and working with my cell phone, who bought me a microphone, headphones and a sound card and allowed me to start working professionally.
– What genre do you work in and what do you think makes your music so accepted?
I am focused on urban music, trap, reggaeton, as part of a new stage. Last year I had a different perception of music, I feel that I have matured and I know that I want to dedicate myself 100%.
I think that the key to success is being oneself, not pretending to be someone else, I reflect that in my songs, sometimes I don’t even realize the personality that I show in my lyrics, which always talk about my experiences or how i see the world
– Today you are not alone in your musical project, how many people work with you?
At first it was just against the world, but today I have people who help me, manager, legal representative and I put together my own band for the presentations, it is more beautiful to work as a team.
– Do you compose and continue producing your songs?
Singing is very important, like 50% of the music career, and the rest is composing, producing and promoting yourself. My forte is composition.
– What do you think about the numbers of your listeners and followers?
Although I am happy with the public I have achieved, those numbers are not enough to brag about, I always try to improve myself and I believe that I can reach more people, that this is not the limit.
– You have an audience from other countries, where do they follow you from?
Seeing the reactions I discovered that there are listeners from Mexico, Spain, Ecuador and Argentina. Recently we went with Elías to Peru and we realized that in other countries we are more appreciated than in ours. There they made us feel special, here they say ‘Look at this, the artist is wanting to become’.
– And how do you process the ‘hate’?
It’s a strong thing, especially for someone my age. Although it did not affect me, I want to advise people to think about the damage their comments do, because there are others who do not handle it well. There are like two thousand videos of my performances, but some people only relied on one, the bad one, to talk about me.
– What’s coming for you?
A lot of music is coming, it will change from the perception of the lyrics as part of a new project. There will also be more shows, what happened doesn’t stop me, it’s a boost.
Yarit Abdul Leaño Garabito was born in Potosí. Although he still lives in his city, his bases of operations are Sucre and La Paz, from where he plans to expand. Some of his most popular songs are Ya es historia, TBT and Copas de amor, with millions of views.
