Where is Tropea

Tropea is an Italian municipality in Calabria, in the south of the country, and is a very famous summer resort for being located next to the paradisiacal coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

It is a romantic town, where you can spend the afternoon with an ice cream or get lost among the innumerable streets full of history and art. It has a lively old town full of shops, restaurants and local craft stalls.

It is known precisely for its historic center at the top of the cliffs, its beaches and its red onions. Built on top of an ancient Byzantine cemetery, the 12th-century cathedral has marble sarcophagi and a painting of Our Lady of Romania, the protector of the city.

According to legend, it was founded by Hercules. Its current name was given for the first time in the V century after Christ and in the following centuries, it was cited, more times as the land that suffered repeated attacks by the Saracens.

The long history of the city has led Tropea to have one of the most beautiful and best-preserved old towns in Calabria, largely due to the beautiful churches that still stand.

The church of Santa María de la isla located on a cliff directly on the beach is one of the most famous postcards. Behind the church there is a well-kept garden with paths that lead to terraces overlooking the sea. The landscape is worthy of the maximum attention because the corners of each city, the beaches, and the monuments achieve with their intensity and diversity of views, to enthuse anyone.

Tourists’ favorites are its white sand beaches and crystal clear sea.

How much does it cost to stay

Due to its beauty that attracts (and a lot) travelers, the town developed a wide range of hotels for all budgets. For those looking for a cheaper option, there are rooms on Airbnb from 30 euros (about US $ 34) per night for two people, but there are also options with more amenities for up to 120 euros (about US $ 136).

For those who want to be close to the beach, a night in a 4-star hotel in high season can cost 140 euros (about US $ 158) per night (including breakfast). Other more modern options go up to 200 euros per night (about US $ 226).
