MADRID, Spain.- The Cuban telecommunications monopoly, ETECSA, cut off the internet in the country this Thursday after Cubans in different neighborhoods of the capital went out to manifest due to the blackout they have suffered since last Monday.
As graphs of specialized platforms have shown, the cut of this service has been almost general.
“Metrics show a near-total collapse of internet traffic from Cuba amid reports of large protests over power outages and poor conditions exacerbated by Hurricane Ian, with security forces deployed; incident likely to limit the free flow of information”, denounced YuccaByteCuban independent media specialized in technology, activism and society.

In similar scenarios, ETECSA has limited its services to prevent new sources of protest from arising. This was the case on July 11, 2021 (J11) and July 14, 2022, the dates on which the largest demonstrations against the Castro government were recorded.
Since last Monday the 26th, a few hours after Hurricane Ian left the north coast of Pinar del Río, the Island has been in a total blackout, according to the authorities due to “an opening in the national electrical system.
The information was confirmed by the Electric Union of Cuba in a post on Twitter, in which he assured that “work is being done to gradually restore the service.” However, the country continues without electricity service this Friday, September 30.
