The PSTU candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Vera Lucia Pereira, defended today (29) the criminalization of homophobia. The candidate said she was in favor of projects such as Bill (PL) 122 of 2006, by federal deputy Iara Bernardi (PT), which provided for imprisonment of up to three years for cases of homophobia. The bill was shelved in 2014 after failing to pass the Senate.
“Our candidacy is in the service of organizing LGBTIs [lésbicas, gays, bissexuais e transexuais e intersexuais] workers and the poor in defense of their claims and to destroy this system of exploitation and oppression”, said Vera, on a campaign in Pará. “We defend the recovery of projects that were barred, such as PL 122, which criminalizes lgbtphobia and the sex education project in schools, to improve them in a broad and democratic debate with the entire LGBTI movement,” she added.
Vera also proposed the creation of specialized police stations for complaints of LGBTphobia, the construction of shelters for victims of homophobia expelled from their homes or in situations of violence, and the implementation of quotas for transgender people in universities and public tenders.
The candidate also defended specialized health care and the free distribution of drugs for the treatment of HIV, as well as hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery performed by the Unified Health System (SUS).
