the president of MexicoAndrés Manuel López Obrador, said this Thursday that he offered to supply Germany with Mexican natural gas in the face of supply problems due to the conflict with Russia, and estimated that it would cover 30% of its fuel needs.
The president informed in his morning press conference of the offer he made to the president of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during his visit to Mexico last week.

“Now that the president of Germany was there, we suggested that, not for commercial reasons, but to support, as we do with everyone, we could send gas, we have gas,” he said, quoted by Eph.
Questioned about the amount, López Obrador assured that Mexico’s natural gas would serve to supply 30% of what Germany needs, citing that the European country had a gas supply contract with Russia and closed its nuclear plants.
The president acknowledged “that it would take time” because Mexico needs to build two liquefaction plants to freeze the gas and send it. Although he indicated that there is a US company, New Fortress Energy, with technology that allows gas to be transported by ship without the need to build a plant on land.
“In the same ship the gas is frozen and transported and there it is regasified in the port where there is the pipeline, that is, progress has already been made on that. In any case, they would have to make an agreement with this American company, but we do have gas availability”, he explained.
Mexico, he affirmed, has surplus gas because there are hydrocarbon contracts for the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), a state company, and it is also being extracted from the new oil fields that the country is exploiting. “So yes, we could help, it’s just a matter for them to decide,” he said.
López Obrador’s offer to Germany comes after it was revealed that many European countries will fall into recession in 2023 if there are gas supply problems in the coming months, according to a report released last Monday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ( OECD).
The OECD, according to Ephcorrected in the report its estimates on the progression of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the euro zone for next year to leave it at 0.3%, with a particular correction for Germany, where a recession of 0.7% is expected .
