Great challenge of the Environment: Educate the population

Ceara Hatton indicated that the Ministry of the Environment has a great challenge that consists of educating and sensitizing the Dominican population on issues of sustainability and proper management of natural resources.

Santo Domingo.- The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Miguel Ceara Hattonwarned this Wednesday that the Dominican Republic must face climate change despite not being the cause of it, since the country only emits 0.08% of the greenhouse gases produced worldwide.

“The issue of climate change is not a problem of option, it is not a possibility, it is a reality and we have to face it,” he specified.

He indicated that the Ministry of Environment has a great challenge that consists of educating and sensitizing the Dominican population on issues of sustainability and proper management of natural resources.

Ceara Hatton argued that the reproduction model must be changed and stop being great predators, which is why the institution has set a line of action that seeks to turn sustainability into culture.

When participating in the Weekly Lunch of the Corripio Group, the official indicated that there is a environmental law (64-00)“which has coercion” and punishment mechanisms for those who violate it in order to coexist harmoniously with nature.

In this sense, the Vice Minister of Climate Change and Sustainability, Miracles De Campsstated that from the Environment, different training and education activities are carried out for the population, in coordination with other entities such as the Ministry of Education.

“We have an Environmental Education Law, constituted at the beginning of 2020, we began work with the Ministry of Education, carrying out workshops for students, camps, training technicians and school teachers,” he explained.

Similarly, he stated that these training sessions are also extended to journalists and communicators in order to contribute to raising awareness among the population about the sustainable management of natural resources.

“We are all being affected by climate change, therefore, we all have the responsibility to work to face it,” said De Camps.

For his part, the Minister added that, “We are in a process of mainstreaming the environmental issue in schools throughout pre-university education. I am in favor of the environmental issue being given as a subject although the pedagogues say no”.

He specified that, “There is no single solution to climate change, each country, due to the reality it lives in, must adapt different policies.”
