SANTO DOMINGO.- The Ministry of Public Health ruled out this Wednesday outbreaks of diseases as a result of the rains caused by the passage of Hurricane Fiona.
This was reported by the director of Risk and Disaster Management, Gina Estrella, who explained that a small diarrheal outbreak was registered in a prison in Samaná, which has been controlled.
Although the health authorities confirmed 5,660 cases of dengue and 33 deaths, they clarified that the increase is not due to the passage of the hurricane through Dominican territory.
This is so, because the disease has an incubation period of two to three weeks, so the authorities call on the population to avoid accumulation of water and objects that contribute to the spread of the disease.
Another situation that worries the health authorities is that in the last four weeks there have been 40 cases of leptospirosis, with a tendency to increase as a result of the floods caused by the atmospheric phenomenon that affected various areas of the country.
El Seibo, La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez and San Cristóbal, are from the demarcations that are in the Public Health peephole, where interventions continue to prevent outbreaks of these diseases.
